Bhag's Buys: The Saturdays | Wordshaker

Back so soon, eh? The Saturdays waste no time in shoving a new album out, only a year after their last. Lead single ‘Forever Is Over’ has a new adult-rock-pop vibe which works rather well, allowing Una Healy’s raspy voice to shine. Its safe incorporation of radio-friendly hooks and guitar riffs makes for a track that Kelly Clarkson now desperately needs.

‘Here Standing’ is a slushy rehash of Jordin Sparks’ ‘No Air’ that works in places, but overall is a tad bland. ‘Ego’ has a light, fluffy bassline that is pop gold dust, and though this song comes very close, it lacks the punch The Saturdays had on their debut. Things pick up on ‘One Shot’, with its fierce, dark verses juxtaposed with an uplifting chorus.

Other rare highlights include the ‘Lose Control’ and the title track – with its opening zoom and the rough computer blips, The Saturdays finally reach pop heaven, before descending into an electropop blur with album closers ‘Deeper’ and ‘2.A.M’.

The album lacks the oomph of ‘Up’, and though their sound has been more experimental, the quality of Chasing Lights is absent. Looking at the theatrical album cover, you’d be forgiven for expecting grander things from this set, yet Wordshaker is a disappointing return. Note to The Saturdays: go back to the drawing board for album number three.
